Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College (VWCC) is accepting applications for a full-time Student Support Specialist (Educational Support Specialist II) position to facilitate a well-run, welcoming, student-friendly support system within student services areas located in Chapman Hall. This position hires, trains, and manages student ambassadors who greet students, provide basic assistance in the areas of financial aid, onboarding processes, student applications, etc. and direct students to the appropriate department for additional assistance. In addition to overseeing student ambassadors and the Chapman Hall front desk operations, this position provides front desk coverage as needed, assists students with financial aid and records needs, responds to student questions, maintains related knowledge bases in applicable systems, and assists with workshops/events. This position also manages the creation of ID badges for students and employees.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA’s/Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in administrative support or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training.
- Customer service training and experience working in a high-traffic environment with diverse populations while effectively managing multiple responsibilities and tasks.
- Excellent organizational skills with the demonstrated ability to prioritize responsibilities in a high traffic environment and meet established deadlines without compromising service.
- Computer skills and related software training, including Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, Access, and Outlook, as well as experience with Student Information Systems (like PeopleSoft) and Case Management Systems (like Navigate).
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and interpret policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues, and the general public.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with persons from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to accurately perform detailed audits of student records.
- Strong mathematical skills and attention to detail.
- Well-developed public speaking and presentation skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting students in a higher education setting.
Experience hiring and supervising employees.
Experience managing and improving processes and workflow.
