Mission or Goal of Unit: Provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia with the goal of improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research and outcome-focused patient care.

Chief Purpose of this position: The chief purpose of this position is to advance the patient care, research and teaching missions through direct patient care in the clinic, the conduct of clinical research and training of residents, medical students and other trainees.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching:
- Assist in the supervision of residents, fellows, and other learners in the environment.
- Participate in the orientation of each group of house staff and students to the Rehabilitation program.
- Assist in establishing the core curriculum including a list of reading material for house staff and students.
- Assist in the evaluation of the house staff and students assigned to the facilities after each rotation.

Clinical:
- Primary clinical responsibilities include inpatient rehabilitation unit. Includes work with patients with stroke, amputations, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and general impairment.
- Be responsible for the proper management and quality of service in the provision of care at the facilities.
- As appropriate serve as an ex-officio member of committees in the facility, giving guidance and assistance when needed.
- Be responsible for the enforcement of the Hospital Medical Staff By-laws and rules, and regulations. Follow faculty medical staff bylaws.
- Cooperate with the facility Administrator in the purchase of supplies and equipment and formulate special regulations and policies applicable to the care of patients. Provide in-service as required.
- Report directly to the Vice Chairman for Clinical Practice and meet the needs of the department as defined by the Vice Chair and Department Chairman.
- Ensure that medical records are reviewed to determine appropriate patient care and regulations for all governing agencies.
- Be available to contact the responsible attending physician regarding matters of concern related to the care of patients.
- Meet with facility physicians, management staff, and departmental chairmen to facilitate daily interdepartmental working relationships as requested by the department chair.
- Assist the billing professionals in the preparation of appropriate charges for the medical services rendered and in the review of non-reimbursed billings. Meet VCUHS documentation and coding guidelines.
- Attend required training. Assist in the establishment of referral sources for the department.
- Maintain practice credentials and completion of education as required by hospital, university, and state practice organization.

Required Qualifications:

- MD or DO degree or equivalent and board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Effective oral and written communication and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications:

- Teaching experience at the resident and medical student level.
- 5 years of experience in inpatient rehabilitation, managing specialized patient populations such as stroke, SCI/complex care, neurodegenerative, and ortho/trauma/surgical.
