Position Summary:

The Director of Career and Employment Services (CES) has direct overall responsibility for career and employment services for Puget Sound students, providing comprehensive resources and advising for students at every point in their career planning: employment (part-time, full-time, work-study), internships, career exploration, job search skills and more. The director provides leadership for the development and implementation of programs that increase the awareness of and educate students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and others regarding career development and student employment topics. The director serves as the university's career and employment services liaison and advisor to university leadership in support of the university's strategic goals and key objectives. The director ensures that Puget Sound's career programs and services are integrated with alumni and parent relations , academic partners, and co-curricular programs and services (admission, student financial services, new student orientation, communications, retention, etc.).

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:


Leadership and Collaboration:

• As a member of the Provost's Academic Leadership Team, contributes to the development and implementation of highly effective, integrated career and employment services, advancing and complementing the broad educational goals and the mission of the university.
• Working with the CES team, provides creative leadership, program development, and administration of a comprehensive, centralized career and employment services center that provides individualized resources and advising for students at every point in their career planning; identifies current and future needs and establishes goals to meet the identified needs; develops goals-based programs, services, and policies; and oversees implementation.
• Collaborates with the Dean of Experiential Learning and the experiential learning group (ELG) to deliver exceptional support, programs, and services related to Experiential Learning @ Puget Sound.
• Champions a student-centered focus; collaborates and partners strategically with faculty and staff, alumni, parents, employers, and others to support students as they align themselves with opportunities leading to creative, productive, and satisfying professional lives.
• Provides oversight, vision and direction, consultation, and support to CES staff; schedules, plans and conducts regular staff meetings to inform staff of issues and events within and outside of CES and to discuss opportunities and develop plans; provides informal and formal staff performance feedback in support of goal attainment and professional development; and recruits, selects, trains, coaches, mentors, and supports CES staff in the implementation of programs, services, and policies.
• Informs, advises, and counsels university leadership on trends and developments.
• Engages in lateral planning and collaboration across departments in support of institutional initiatives; represents CES interests and perspective on campus-wide committees and task forces as appropriate.
• Collaborates with the associate directors in managing on- and off-campus student employment programs from a strategic perspective; collaborates with associate director in the day-to-day administration of the university's student employment programs, which include federal work study, state work study, non-work study, part-time employment, and summer employment programs; supports the associate director in evaluating, planning, and administering the programs.
• Collaborates with associate directors in analyzing the design of programs and services, assessing the effectiveness of programs in meeting overall strategic objectives; oversees the development and implementation of changes and improvements to programs. Provides oversight and vision for university employer relations partnerships.
• Ensures that development and implementation of programs, policies and practices are in compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations and Puget Sound policies; conducts periodic audits of policies and procedures; updates or creates new policies and procedures as needed.
• Establishes and maintains effective networks/relationships with business, industry, government, education, and community leaders, as well as professional colleagues at other higher education institutions.
• Provides vision and supports strategic partnership with the Alumni Council Career Development and Mentorship Committee; serves as primary liaison.
• Provides strategic oversight to Logger Link Mentorship Program and collaborates with both CES and Alumni & Parent Relations colleagues to develop mentorship initiatives.
• Represents Puget Sound through active involvement and leadership in regional and national associations which includes the university's membership in the Liberal Arts Career Network (LACN).


Reports and Systems:

• Oversees data collection and analysis of data relating to all aspects of CES; including but not limited to success of students and recent graduates through the Graduate First Destination Survey.
• Works with CES team to assess data, analyze trends, and identify methods for continuously improving career and employment services for Puget Sound students.
• Analyzes CES and related systems and reporting needs in partnership with the leadership team, the data and systems support specialist, strategic internal partners, and Technology Services; facilitates the implementation of automated systems solutions and reports to meet those needs; plans, input from others, and thinks creatively to ensure best use of technology to improve service to constituents.
• Oversees digital communication strategy for the department and the use of the uConnect platform.
• Oversees the preparation of information for a variety of surveys and reports.


Supervision:

• Associate Director of Career and Employer Engagement, Associate Director of Student Employment Programs, Training, and Development.
• In collaboration with associate directors, engage in Stay interviews annually with the CES team.


Budget Administration:

• Manages CES annual operating budget.
• Authorizes and processes purchase orders and invoices for payment for CES expenses and prepares budget requests to meet short- and long-term goals of CES.
• Collaborates with associate director and colleagues in the Office of Finance to develop the university's student employment budget.
• Collaborates with the associate director to provide student employment budget variance reports to the Office of Finance three times annually.
• Collaborates with the associate director, and the Dean of Experiential Learning to develop student employment budget recommendations for the Budget Task Force.
• Collaborates with the associate director to manage the annual budget allocation/planning process for student staff compensation.


Communications:

• Provides oversight and direction for a strategic communication plan for career and employment services; communicates practices, policies and procedures to students, faculty and staff members, alumni and parents, employers, and others.
• Reviews and edits communication materials, correspondence, and reports; develops forms, and related resource materials as required.
• Effectively communicates career and employment services information and promotes education regarding resources to a diverse community of students; in collaboration with the communications coordinator and other CES staff members develops and/or updates a variety of communications tools.


Other Functions:

• Leads individual and group information sessions as needed or requested.
• Serves on or leads task forces, committees and project teams as required.
• Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Requirements:

• Master's degree from an accredited college or university in higher education administration or related field and five (5) years' increasingly responsible, related experience OR Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years' increasingly responsible, related experience, including management experience.
• Higher education experience required; commitment to liberal arts education and cultural diversity.
• Demonstrated experience with program administration and staff supervision. Outstanding interpersonal, problem solving, and team building skills.
• Excellent organizational and analytical skills. Able to learn quickly and continuously.
• Exceptional communication skills. Ability to listen with sensitivity and to respond appropriately.
• Ability to work effectively with a broad range of constituents: students, employers, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, parents, and advisory boards.
• Must demonstrate a strong customer service orientation and have the ability to organize, analyze, prioritize, and problem-solve within a fast-paced office environment with frequent interruptions. Ability to work and move projects forward with temporary ambiguity.

Compensation and Benefits:
The anticipated range for this position is $85,000 to $90,000 annualized. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

-Positions that work less than .75 FTE (1,560 hours per year) do not qualify for long-term disability or education benefits.

-Temporary positions that work at least .50 FTE (1,040 hours per year) will be eligible for benefits.
