Job Description Summary:
The employee will participate in federally and privately funded studies in Dr. Darren Wallace's laboratory in the Jared Grantham Kidney Institute at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Wallace directs a research program that investigates the cellular mechanisms involved in renal cystic disease in patients with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a common genetic disorder. The research involves the use of human biomaterials (tissues and primary cells) from patients with PKD and normal controls, and the use of genetically modified mice with renal cystic disease. The laboratory also maintains repositories or Biobanks for human biomaterials and biospecimens (blood and urine). The Research Assistant will assist in research studies for the investigation of renal cyst expansion and fibrosis in PKD, evaluate novel drugs to slow cyst growth in cell and animal models of PKD, and provide technical support for the operations of the Core.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in biology or related field

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree in biology or related field

Work Experience: Experience with small animal experimentation, tissue culture, in vitro assays, and molecular biology techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, RT-PCR, immunoblot analysis, and immunofluorescence staining.

Job Duties Outlined:

Research Overview: Assist with research experiments and core operations under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Be capable of working independently and collaboratively on research projects.
  • Under direction, manage mouse breeding, genotyping, and small animal experimentation.
  • Colony maintenance.
  • Perform specific molecular and cell biology techniques such as protein, DNA, and RNA extractions, RT-PCR, immunoblot analysis, immunofluorescence staining, histological analysis, and tissue culture.
  • Present data at lab meetings and assist with the preparation of manuscripts for publication and grant proposals.
  • Assist with drug administration to mice according to mode of delivery and schedule.
  • Assist in training students and laboratory personnel.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the principal investigator.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University, and the Nephrology Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
