About Student Health Services:
Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech (Prince William) campuses.
Responsibilities:
The Associate Medical Director ensures clinical excellence and the well-being of our students, through supervision of providers and direct medical care. The Associate Medical Director provides students with primary health, counseling, health education, and prevention services in support of student learning and retention.
The Associate Medical Director
- Provides supervision of clinical provider staff (physicians, nurse practitioners);
- Provides supervision of lab manager and serves as lab director;
- Ensures provider staffing to meet clinic needs;
- Provides consultation and/or direct patient care for outpatient medical care to students;
- Updates policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable state, federal, and university regulations;
- Identifies educational/development needs, and opportunities for provider staff;
- Serves on SHS executive committee, and manages committee membership of providers;
- May provide Saturday, holiday, and after-hours coverage as needed; and
- Reports to the Executive Director of Student Health Services; provides public health and medical recommendations to the SHS Executive Director, and provides leadership to SHS when the Executive Director is unavailable.
Required Qualifications:
- Medical degree from an accredited Medical School;
- Valid Virginia medical license or a valid medical license in another state with the ability to obtain one in Virginia;
- Valid DEA License;
- Ability to provide ambulatory medical care to college students;
- Ability to provide supervision to other healthcare providers;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
- Knowledge and understanding of public health and community health.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Medical experience typically obtained in 2-5+ years post residency training;
- Experience providing medical services in a college health center;
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team that includes behavioral health services;
- Experience typically obtained in 2 years in leadership/oversight role in a medical unit;
- Some experience in budget planning for a unit/department;
- Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze data to make data-based decisions; and
- Board certification in a primary care field.
