High School Sports Reporter
The Register-Guard/registerguard.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, located in Eugene, Oregon, has an opening for a preps sports reporter.
This reporter will cover prep sports in Lane County, primarily in Eugene and Springfield. Occasionally, this reporter will help cover University of Oregon sports.
The ideal candidate is comfortable and experienced using social media to engage with fans, enhance reporting and promote stories.
This role requires working weekends and nights to cover games, tournaments and other needs.
Located in the Willamette Valley, Eugene is about an hour from the beautiful, rugged Oregon Coast. Head north on Interstate 5 to reach Salem, the state capital, in under an hour or Portland in two hours. The Eugene Airport is only 10 minutes from downtown, and Amtrak rolls into the city center.
Eugene is a robust and vibrant college town with several institutions of higher learning, including the University of Oregon. Known as Track Town USA, it’s an outdoors-minded community with miles of urban forested trails for hiking and running.
As a culinary destination, Eugene offers an abundance of locally grown, raised and produced food and beverage products. Together with neighboring Springfield, the city of Eugene provides a quality of life affirmed and enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Responsibilities:
- Produce content in a variety of formats that connects with readers and grows our prep sports audience.
- Break news quickly in a competitive market.
- Become an authority on the high school athletes we cover.
- Engage with sports fans on social media and use those platforms to help reach potential readers.
- Develop sources for deep dives into important topics and issues related to the beat.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination or education and experience.
- 3-5 years’ experience is preferred.
- Strong command of AP grammar and style.
- Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and "publication ready."
- Passionate and enthusiastic about news and content that will work well with audiences on social platforms.
- Comfortable and experienced using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.
- Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
- Excels in a fast-paced sports news environment and understands the digital-first mission.
- Works weekends and nights as needed.
- Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the biggest stories.
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
