JOB DESCRIPTION

The Davidson College Fellows program provides graduating seniors or recent graduates an entry-level, one-year or two-year term-limited position in an information technology field. Our purpose is to help you grow your talent and skills, while you help us solve technology problems for the college. Fellows positions are open to all recent graduates, although the college gives a hiring preference to Davidson graduates. For more details about the Fellows program, please see https://www.davidson.edu/offices-and-services/human-resources/work-davidson/fellows-program

Are you an upcoming or recent college graduate with a passion for working with data? Do you enjoy interacting with databases, building pipelines to move and transform information from various sources, and using visualization techniques to tell a story with that data? Are you interested in gaining a wealth of hands-on experience and 1-on-1 mentorship from seasoned technologists in a relaxed but mission-driven environment?

If you answered yes, we invite you to apply to the position of Data Engineering & Business Intelligence Fellow at Davidson College. This role will join the college's Data Management team within the Technology & Innovation department for a one-year position.

The Data Engineering & Business Intelligence Fellow will work alongside professional developers and the Manager of Data Operations to ideate, build, deploy, and maintain the college's data platform. This includes data warehouses, integration pipelines, API platforms, reports, dashboards, and low-code applications. These products all serve the Davidson community and are a vital part of the college's shared services and infrastructure, so you will be expected to meet and converse with members of that community to hear their needs, ask questions, and create data products that achieve their goals. Supporting you on your right and left will be other T&I teams, such as Cloud Solutions, Digital Campus, and Administrative Services, and you will collaborate with these colleagues to bring data-driven solutions to life for our students, faculty, and staff.

Along the way, you'll gain valuable insights into the world of enterprise information technology: not just architecture and coding, but also project management, relationship building with stakeholders, and professional networking. These are all key ingredients for a successful career in data, and this position combines these with hands-on projects to create an excellent opportunity for those who are transitioning from school to the workforce or additional education.

Job Description

The Data Engineering & Business Intelligence Fellow is centrally located in the T&I department and reports directly to the Manager of Data Operations. With training and mentorship from their teammates, the fellow will take responsibility for several technical projects across multiple data platforms, and will play an active role in maintaining and improving Davidson's data management portfolio. This requires the fellow to be a hard worker, an attentive listener, and an inquisitive and critical thinker.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain business intelligence data models, reports, and dashboards in Microsoft Power BI for a variety of cross-campus partners.
  • Create, deploy, and monitor data pipelines that orchestrate the movement of data between vital college systems.
  • Query relational databases using SQL for the purposes of data extraction, reporting, and analysis.
  • Analyze and visualize data using Excel, Power BI, and other approved tools to create meaningful insights and drive institutional decision-making.
  • Use SQL to develop low-code applications for storing and managing data related to various college business processes.
  • Attend weekly 1-on-1 mentoring and feedback sessions with the Manager of Data Operations.
  • Create and maintain a backlog of project work to be done, and attend bi-weekly planning meetings with other members of the Data Management team.
  • Regularly meet with stakeholders to elicit project specifications from them, understand their needs, and present your work to them for feedback and approval.
  • Write internal documentation around project requirements as well as manuals and guides for end users.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to meet institutional goals and promote effective collaboration across departments.
  • Engage with industry groups and professional peers by attending user group meetings, workshops, or conferences specific to your work with data at Davidson.
Desired Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Experience analyzing large volumes of data in Excel, R, Matlab, or a similar program.
  • Experience querying relational databases with SQL.
  • Knowledge of a business intelligence platform like Microsoft Power BI or Tableau is not required, but highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (e.g. Python, JavaScript) is beneficial.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and an inquisitive nature. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
As a fellow and a recent grad, we don't expect you to have experience with all of our platforms, or possess all of the necessary skills on day 1. Your success is critical to our success. Rest assured that Davidson T&I is committed to investing the time and resources required to train and onboard all fellows. Eventually, if selected for this role, you'll grow into the strong technician and analyst we know you can be.
