Job Description:

The Research Assistant will work in the Laboratory of Eric Morrow MD., PhD under the direct supervision of Dr. Morrow and his laboratory colleagues. The Morrow Laboratory studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurological disease, including autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy, neurodevelopmental, and neurodegenerative disease, including rare diseases. This involves wet-lab biological research as well as allied patient-oriented research which is conducted in collaboration with clinical colleagues.

The Research Assistant position is responsible for conducting experiments in molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry related to neurological disease. Duties include performing genotyping, PCR and other basic molecular biology procedures. Assisting with maintenance of mouse colonies and genotyping is an important part of the work. Duties will also include work using biochemical methods as well as tissue culture methods, including culture of primary neuronal cells and patient-derived stem cells. There is a component that involves preparing tissue for study using a variety of conventional and advanced microscopy methods. There is an opportunity to assist with data analysis and preparation of manuscripts.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience (Grade 7)
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in the field of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field.
  • Required: Undergraduate research experience with previous experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Course work in genetics, cell biology and neuroscience at the bachelor's level.
  • Experience with PCR genotyping and application of molecular biology, biochemical and cell biological techniques.
Education and Experience (Grade 8)
  • Required: Bachelor's degree in the field of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related field plus 1-2 years of related full-time lab experience.
  • Required: Undergraduate research experience with previous experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Course work in genetics, cell biology and neuroscience at the bachelor's level.
  • Experience with PCR genotyping and application of molecular biology, biochemical and cell biological techniques.

  • Abilities and interest in learning to perform experiments in a biology laboratory.
  • Interest in human genetics and disease.
  • Facility with basic computer software and some abilities in statistical and computational genetic methods is a plus.

  • Strong organizational and written communication skills.
  • Working some evenings, weekends and holidays may be required.
